Modern Day Prophet Blog

Animal Justice:
The Best Friend Animals Society works for no-kill project to save animals in American shelters.  The organization saves animals in shelters.  They then help the animals find a new family.  These families are safe and loving so the animals do not go through the same trauma.  Their mission is important because just like humans, animals need love and support, which is what the Best Friend Animals Society is trying to provide to these in need animals.

Environmental Justice:
The Sierra Club protects and restores National Forests.  John Muir founded the organization is 1892.  The organization also protects public lands from mining and drilling.  Their mission is important because it prolongs the life of the Earth, therefore prolonging the life of organisms on the Earth.

Peace Justice:
The Wounded Warrior Project helps veterans by improving their lives after serving our country.  That fight for veterans who have both mental and physical injuries.  Whether the injuries are physical or invisible, the organization does not discriminate and helps to their best abilities.  Their mission is important because it helps these vulnerable veterans feel safe and like they have people who not only understand them, but also want to help them improve their lives.

Human Justice:
The Shirts For a Cure is an organization that helps unprivileged women pay for breast cancer treatment.  These women cannot afford the treatment themselves and the organization is trying to provide these women with the money they need.  100% of the money made from the shirts goes to women in need of treatment.  Their mission is important because it helps women who think they will not be able to fight have a chance in the battle.

The injustice I am most passionate about and why is the peace injustice.  I want to eliminate as much discrimination as I can because it affects people whether they can or cannot control it.  I am passionate about this injustice because I have been discriminated against myself and it does not feel good.  All I want is peace in the world so I can feel comfortable walking down my hometown street without fearing what I look like physically and mentally.

Blog Response #12

The message that Mary brings to me is to trust God.  We as children of God should trust him and the path he has planned for us.  Mary trusted God and when he said that she was going to birth his child she simply accepted it and said yes.  I was a strong believer that everything happens for a reason and that God has a plan for me in life so I should trust him and not be so worried about everything.  Once my grandma died it was hard for me to process it because only a few months after my dad also died.  So far at least three other people really close to me have passed after them.  I think that it all happened so fast in just two and a half years that I have not had time to realize what it all means.  At one point I was questioning my belief that everything happens for a reason.  In my mind there was no sensible reason why all of these people were dying.  After a while I did not know what to think and I just turned to God more than I had ever before in my life.  I had to trust that God has a plan for my family and me and that we will all be alright.  I should always say yes to God like Mary did and trust what he has planned for me in my life.

Alumni Interview Project

What does it mean to be a member of the Notre Dame community?  Ms. Boghossian helped me answer that question during our interview together.  Ms Boghossian said, "As a student, being a member of the Notre Dame community meant surrounding myself with empowered, young women who were ready to accept challenges, while still being surrounded by supportive teachers.  As an alumnae, I know that I can turn to my Notre Dame sisters, as well as network of teachers and staff members for continued strength, and encouragement throughout my life."  What it means to be a member of the Notre Dame community to me is that I can be who I want to be and express myself freely.  I can make goals, with the support of my teachers and classmate, and achieve them.  I am positive that I can carry the many positive relationships I have here with me throughout life because we will always be there for each other.  I am also a representative of the Notre Dame community so it is important for me to exemplify a strong, powerful, hard working woman.  I am proud and blessed to be apart of this community and would not change where I am today.

Considering the quote: "I have looked into your eyes with my eyes.  I have put my heart near your heart," what I have learned and what we discussed, there is some Sr. Dorothy with you.  I can be extremely dedicated if I really am passionate about something.  I am passionate about many things from sports to family to friends.  An example is my coaching and how I show up and coach all of the practices and games even though it is volunteer and I am very busy.  I love the girls and am there for them whenever they need.  Not only am I a coach, but I let them feel comfortable enough to come and talk to me when they need someone to talk to or someone to lean on.  Sr. Dorothy also helped people get their land back, but was also their family and friend.  The Sr. Dorothy in me is shown through my love for helping people while also being their genuine friend and family member.

Blog Response #9

If we are journeying all our human lives towards perfection, the role of suffering is to make use stronger so that we can achieve the goals we set for ourselves.  Suffering can provide moments of learning for everyone.  Whether you are watching the suffering, experiencing the suffering, or even just hearing about the suffering, you learn from it.  No matter who the suffering starts with, everyone can be affected or learn from it.  Most people cannot help what happens to them, but they can control their reaction.  They can dwell on it and suffer or they can learn from it and become stronger so that hopefully they will not encounter it again, but if they do they know how to react to it.  People also have different definitions of suffering.  What might be a failure to one person can be a success to another.  It all depends on they way you look at things.  If you stay positive and do not let the bump in the road get to you, then you will already be living a life of perfection because you know how to deal with the difficult hardship.

Blog Response #8

1st Beatitude:  Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
The meaning behind this Beatitude is that people must confess their spiritual poverty before they can get spiritual riches from God.  If we follow this Beatitude, we will live with humbleness and grace from God's spiritual gifts.  What we need to give up is our poor spirit so we could be thankful for God's gifts.

2nd Beatitude:  Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.
The meaning behind this Beatitude is that all people all considered the children of God and to reflect this characteristic, they need to be peacemakers.  If followed, we would live in a more peaceful environment where everyone would love each other and there would be less fights around the world.  What we need to give up is our negative attitudes so that we would be able to live peacefully as the children of God.

Experiment: After going a day guided by these two Beatitudes, I realized a couple of things.  I was definitely happier because I went through the day with serenity, peace, and thankfulness.  It was really easy because with peace there was no drama, with serenity I was calm and serine, and with thankfulness I realized how much I was blessed.

15 Year Old Jesus:
Jesus was like almost every other 15 year old boy, short and scrawny.  He was upset he was not as big and tall as some of his other friends.  Jesus had a few close friends, but was not the most popular kid around.  Jesus was determined to do big things and put more to his name besides the son of Mary and Joseph.  When Jesus walked home from school the older boys on the streets would pick on him and steal the snacks his mom packed him.  He would then go home to his room and cry himself to sleep.  His parents knew it was a private time and Jesus did not want to be bothered, so every night Mary and Joseph slipped a note under his door.  These were cute little notes that had a quick sentence of how much they loved him following a scripture.  Jesus woke up every morning and read his parent's little notes and learned a lot from them.  He got ready for school in the morning and went to his parents for breakfast.  Every morning he would neglect to talk to his parents because he would be so ashamed of crying the night before, but his neglect came off as rude and him being a smart alec.  Mary and Joseph would then give him a good talking to and punish him by not letting him go to the temple that Sunday.  For most boys in his town, this would be a blessing to not go, but Jesus loved the temple and hated his parents for doing this.  Instead, he would sit in his room and read the scriptures until he soon started getting his own views the scriptures.
